Capacity Building

Strengthening Institutions, People, and Systems for Sustainable Development

Social Action for Rural Development (SARDA) places strong emphasis on capacity building as a core strategy for achieving sustainable and scalable development outcomes. With over two decades of field experience across multiple states, SARDA works to strengthen the capacities of communities, institutions, farmers, youth, women, and its own workforce to effectively participate in and sustain development processes.

SARDA implements capacity-building initiatives across its three operational wings—Direct Action Project Unit (DAPU), Resource Support Project Unit (RSPU), and CSR Unit—ensuring both grassroots empowerment and technical excellence.

Community & Institutional Capacity Building

SARDA strengthens grassroots institutions such as Self Help Groups (SHGs), Farmer Groups, Village Development Committees (VDCs), Watershed Committees, and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). The organization has been actively supporting 62 FPOs across multiple states under programs such as the CBBO-CSS scheme, NABARD’s PODF-ID, SFAC, NDDB, NCDC, and UPPCF initiatives.

Through training on governance, financial management, business planning, and market linkages, SARDA enables these institutions to function as self-reliant and sustainable community-led organizations.

Agriculture & Livelihood Capacity Building

SARDA builds the capacities of farmers and rural producers through structured training programs under initiatives such as FSPF, LEDP, Krishak Pathshala, TDF-WADI, watershed development programs, and climate-resilient agriculture projects.

Training areas include:

  • Climate-smart and sustainable agriculture

  • Agroforestry and natural resource management

  • Value chain development and agribusiness

  • Organic and natural farming practices

  • Water management and soil conservation

These interventions enhance farmers’ technical knowledge, productivity, and income opportunities.

Youth Skill Development & Employability

Through its Bihar Skill Development Centre (BSDC) under the Kushal Yuva Program (KYP) of BSDM, SARDA provides structured skill training to rural youth. The program focuses on digital literacy, communication skills, and employability enhancement.

In Jamui District (Bihar), SARDA has:

  • Skilled 2,000+ youth

  • Facilitated placement of 700+ youth

  • Supported 200+ youth entrepreneurs

SARDA also conducts agriculture and livelihood-based skill training to promote self-employment and rural enterprise development.

Capacity Building for Governance & PRI Institutions

SARDA conducts training programs for Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), government functionaries, and community leaders, strengthening local governance systems and improving the implementation of development schemes at the grassroots level.

Technical & Professional Capacity Building (RSPU)

Through its Resource Support Project Unit (RSPU), SARDA undertakes specialized capacity-building initiatives in areas such as:

  • Social Impact Assessment (SIA)

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

  • Rehabilitation & Resettlement (R&R)

  • Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Asset Valuation and Socio-Economic Studies

These activities enhance the technical capacity of stakeholders, institutions, and project teams.

Internal Capacity Building & Human Resource Development

SARDA regularly organises training, orientation programs, and skill-upgradation sessions for its employees and field teams based on organisational and project requirements. These initiatives ensure continuous learning, improved project delivery, and institutional strengthening.

Technology-Enabled Capacity Building

SARDA has established a dedicated GIS (Geographic Information System) Cell to support data-driven planning, mapping, monitoring, and evaluation of Watershed and projects. The GIS unit enhances the capacity of teams and stakeholders to make informed decisions and improve project outcomes.

Geographic Coverage

SARDA’s capacity-building initiatives are implemented across multiple states including:
Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, and Rajasthan, ensuring a wide-scale impact.

Impact

Through its integrated capacity-building approach, SARDA has empowered:

  • 2.5+ lakh rural households

  • Thousands of farmers and women members

  • 62 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)

  • 2000+ rural youth

Conclusion

By strengthening individuals, institutions, and systems, SARDA ensures that development initiatives are sustainable, community-driven, and scalable, contributing to inclusive growth and long-term rural transformation.
